East Orange Board of Education

The East Orange Board of Education consists of seven members who are appointed by the Mayor of East Orange. The board works to ensure that all stakeholders—administrators, educators, and students—meet or exceed the district’s educational goals. Board members volunteer their time and expertise to set district policies, allocate budgets, set district goals and priorities, and hire and retain exceptional staff members.

Biography

Mr. Bergson Leneus

Mr. Bergson Leneus was born in Newark, New Jersey to Haitian immigrant parents. He grew up right here in Orange/East Orange. Born the second of four boys, Mr. Leneus has lived with his wife and four children and worked in the City of East Orange for over fifteen years. Mr. Leneus, better known as “Berg” to close family and friends, graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory High School and earned his bachelor degree in philosophy from Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. 
 
Mr. Leneus is also the property manager for The Park View at 320 where he manages several hundred units within the City of East Orange. Bergson has over five years of experience in the property management field. During this time, He has overseen the due diligence and eventual acquisition of over 60 million in assets in the local community. Berg has also overseen over fifteen million in capital improvement renovations over the past three years. 
 
Bergson's community involvement continues, as he is also the president of a nonprofit organization called the Leneus Family Foundation. Founded in 2013 the organization is dedicated to creating opportunities for children in the local community of East Orange as well as Haiti. 
 
Mr. Bergson Leneus’ success not only in business but in community involvement has proven him to be a pillar of strength. He continuously finds new ways to improve himself and gives back to the community. From his experience as a property manager, to his experience as the East Orange Board of Education President, and President of the Leneus Family Foundation, Berg is a well-rounded individual whose roots lie within the community.

Mr. Jenabu C. Williams, MPA

Jenabu C. Williams was born in Newark but educated in the East Orange Public School system since he was in the fourth grade. Mr. Williams attended Columbian Elementary School, Sojourner Truth Middle School and he graduated from Clifford J. Scott High School in 1992. Mr. Williams participated and excelled in track and field throughout his high school career and in 1992, he won the Northern Hills Conference Championship in the 800-meters, 1600-meters, and the 1600-meter relay. 

Mr. Williams went on to attend Montclair State University where he became a Division III National Champion and All American by helping his team win the 1600-meter relay at the 1993 National Championship in Baldwin, Ohio. Mr. Williams graduated from Montclair State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and he went on to attend Rutgers University where he graduated in 2009 with a masters in Public Administration/ Public Policy.

Mr. Williams truly enjoys youth and he has worked with and around them throughout professional career.  Mr. Williams was a Crisis Intervention Teacher in the Newark Public School system and an Elementary School - Special Education Teacher in the Plainfield Public Schools system for a combined 8 years.  Mr. Williams also has extensive Leadership and Management experience and he is the former Director of Residential Services for Youth Consultation Service of Newark, former Program Director - Interim Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Newark, and the former Associate Executive Director of the YMCA of Eastern Union County.  

Mr. Williams is currently the Executive Director of Sigma Community Enrichment Initiative (SCEI). SCEI is a 501(C)(3) Non-Profit organization based out of Newark, NJ and their mission is to provide youth and young adults facing adversity with strong, enduring, professional services and mentoring services that will change their lives for the better. SCEI partners with families, volunteers, organizations and the community at large to inspire positive change through education, scholarships, community enrichment, and other charitable activities. 

Mr. Williams is an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. – Chi Sigma Chapter and he spends countless hours mentoring hundreds of young men through their Sigma Beta Male Mentoring Club. Mr. Williams is also a proud member of Agape Christian Ministries located in Paterson, NJ where he is the Director of the churches My Son Ministry. Mr. Williams attributes his commitment to community service and to mankind to the strong Christian foundation that was instilled by his loving parents, the countless number of great teachers/ coaches he has had through EOBOE, personal and professional mentors, and the lessons of perseverance he learned from participating in track and field. Mr. Williams currently resides in East Orange, New Jersey with his loving wife Bennay and their two sons, Addae and Joshua.

Dr. Kristie M. Howard

Dr. Kristie M. Howard has dedicated her life to public service in the City of East Orange. She previously served on the East Orange board of education from 2009-2012; and as vice president from 2011-2012. She also served as a member of the rent control board and the zoning board for the City of East Orange. Dr. Howard is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.; a public service organization.

Dr. Howard was employed by the City of East Orange from 2003-2007, where she worked as the city’s grants coordinator and also worked for the Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs. She is an educator by passion and began her teaching career in 1995 as a middle school teacher in the East Orange School District. She is currently employed as the director of student services at the Asbury Park School District. Before coming to the Asbury Park School District, her administrative career was spent entirely within the Essex County Vocational Technical School District for 10 years.

Dr. Howard graduated with a bachelor of science in athletics training from Howard University and earned a juris doctor from Howard University School of Law. She also earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Seton Hall University.

Additionally, Dr. Howard was admitted to the New Jersey state bar in 2007 and subsequently later admitted to the United States District Court for the State of New Jersey. She privately practices law as a sole practitioner with the law offices of Kristie M. Howard, LLC. 

Most importantly, Dr. Howard is the proud mother of three children; Tierra, Carrington, and Chance.

Mr. Cameron B. Jones, Sr.

Cameron B. Jones, Sr. is a senior legislative aide to New Jersey assembly speaker Sheila Y. Oliver and serves on the East Orange Board of Education. Mr. Jones is the district office chief of staff for speaker Oliver, who made history in January 2010 when she became the first African-American woman to hold the top post in the New Jersey Assembly. He joined her staff in 2006 and works in the East Orange District Office, which serves the constituents of the 34th Legislative District, which includes Clifton, East Orange, Glen Ridge, Montclair, and Woodland Park (formerly West Paterson).

In his role, Mr. Jones has multiple responsibilities designed to fulfill speaker Oliver’s goals and agenda for her legislative district. They include maintaining and managing the district office, and coordinating constituent services and district activities. He serves as a liaison between speaker Oliver and her constituents and works to ensure their issues and concerns are addressed. He serves as her representative at meetings and events and also coordinates her meeting and event calendar.

Mr. Jones was appointed to the East Orange Board of Education in May 2008 and is serving a three-year term. As a member, he describes his primary agenda as maximizing the students’ experience as well as raising their levels of achievement and attainment of their goals and aspirations. He believes that community involvement is essential in order for those goals to be reached. He sits on several board committees including legislative affairs, which he chairs, parental involvement, and CWA negotiations.

Mr. Jones is also a member of the Essex Regional Educational Services Commission (ERESC), which provides remedial academic services for grades K-12. He was appointed in May 2010. He also works for Berkeley College in the office of student accounts and has worked at both the Newark and Garrett Mountain Campuses.

He serves as a volunteer with the East Orange General Hospital Community Outreach Program where he is involved with community-based activities, including services for seniors and youth. Previously, Mr. Jones worked in the private sector. His most recent experience was as a corporate sales manager for Wyndham Hotel. Mr. Jones is a 10-year East Orange resident and the proud father of one son.

Ms. Marjorie Perry

Ms. Joy B. Tolliver, Esq.

Joy B. Tolliver, Esq. is a native of East Orange and committed to improving educational opportunities for all children. Joy completed her secondary education at Dwight-Englewood School and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree, Cum Laude, at Fordham University, where she majored in Psychology and minored in Spanish. After Fordham, Joy earned her Doctorate of Jurisprudence Degree from Rutgers School of Law-Newark. 

Joy is an attorney in private practice at the law firm of Weiner Lesniak, where her practice focuses on Labor/Employment Law and Education Law. Joy holds leadership positions within the American Bar Association, Section of Litigation, where she was awarded the prestigious Young Lawyer Leadership Fellowship. Joy is also an Adjunct Professor at Essex County College, where she teaches in the Paralegal Studies Program. 

Joy is deeply committed to mentoring high school and college students and frequently serves as a guest speaker and panelist at various academic, social, and faith-based events to encourage students to pursue their educational and career goals. Joy also enjoys serving in ministry at her church, where she is a member of the Local Board of Administration, the Children’s Ministry, and the Praise Team.

Ms. Terry Swanson-Tucker

Terry M. Swanson-Tucker is a dedicated and consummate professional specializing in fundraising, event planning, and executive concierge. With over fifteen years in government, political, and corporate management, Terry has combined her education, business acumen, creative talent, and experience to create Swantuck, LLC. Swantuck is a boutique service that creates and hosts events perfectly designed to meet the specific needs of the individual and the occasion.  

Terry first discovered her passion and talent for fundraising and event planning while working for the Essex County Democratic Committee of NJ in the role of executive director. This propelled Terry to further get involved in community activities as both a volunteer and in appointed positions. These activities include organizations such as: Women Advocate for Good Government (WAGG), legislative direct liaison to Senator Nia Gill and Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver, PTSA president of the Essex County Vocational and Technical School, member of the East Orange Recreation Advisory Board, and the Essex County Regional School Board (appointed).

While working full-time, and a mother of four, she effectively managed to serve as an East Orange Democratic Committee woman, serve on the East Orange Recreation Advisory Board, be a founding board member of the East Orange Junior Jaguars Pop Warner Organization and the former president of the Kuzuri Kijiji Tenants Association. Terry was later elected to serve as a New Jersey Democratic State Committeewoman and has been recently appointed to the East Orange Board of Education. Terry recently obtained a degree in sociology and currently serves as executive committee member for the Essex Regional Board of Education.

This active and involved mother of four is now also a grandmother of five. Time has only increased Terry’s energy, vision, and fortitude to make the state and the community a better place.
