A Message from Our Superintendent

Greetings EOSD Family,

We have finally crossed the finish line of the 2017–2018 school year! Another successful school year is behind us. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who went beyond the call of duty for our students and school district, assisting in creating a vision of excellence. Throughout this school year, I have visited all twenty-two of our district’s schools on numerous occasions. I have also thoroughly observed every classroom several times, seeing first-hand the exceptional instruction that is taking place, and those areas in need of improvement.

I reflect in admiration and respect on the hard work by our students, teachers, administrators, support staff, and parents in helping us move closer to our vision of East Orange Public Schools: Preparing All Students for College, Careers, and Life in High-Performing Schools. Of course, none of our successes would be possible without the cooperation and contributions from all our committed stakeholders, especially our board of education members and numerous community partners.

In our workplaces and in life, we all adapt to change on a regular basis. In education, this means that we are constantly looking ahead to make sure that we align what we teach and how we teach to help students prepare and thrive locally, nationally, and globally. In our schools this year, teachers and principals have been making some major changes to ensure that we are preparing all students with the skills they will need when they graduate. That’s why our curriculum and assessments may seem more challenging, rigorous, and different than ever before. The New Jersey state standards and PARCC require more in-depth teaching/learning and set new expectations for student achievement, growth, and progress. However, we are ready to meet these new challenges here in the East Orange School District.

Special congratulations to all our Class of 2018 high school graduates! Congratulations also to our pre-school, kindergarten, and grade eight Class of 2018 graduates on your next steps in education. Remember that you are our next generation of leaders, and I expect you to accept that responsibility and love the challenge. To our parents, please stay involved in your child’s education. Thank you so much for all that you’ve done this school year to support our students and our schools. Your involvement is such an integral part of our students’ success. We cannot positively transform our school district without you.

During the summer months, my staff and I will be diligently planning for the new school year: preparing our buildings and grounds, getting our classrooms ready, and learning new and innovative ways to teach and engage our students in a variety of meaningful ways that incorporate rigor, relevance, and relationships. Because we kept our eyes on the prize, this has been another productive school year in many ways. As the East Orange superintendent of schools, I feel fortunate to have so many committed students, dedicated teachers, administrators, support staff, caring/supportive parents, and community partners. Together we will achieve our vision of excellence.

Students: please do not forget to complete your summer academic activity packets and keep your mind actively engaged on positive things that will enhance your brainpower. I wish each of you and your families a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing you in September. The best is yet to come!

Respectfully,

Kevin West
