I Love Me More

The Department of Educational Support Service and Parent Relations, DPAC hosted an unforgettable evening with authors Dr. Jamila T. Davis and Ms. Tara Wallace as we dove into the crucial topics of social and emotional wellness, along with insight on building and sustaining healthy relationships. We also had Mental Health Activist, Lt. Marilyn Berrouet who was able to give us a local knowledge on SEL throughout the East Orange Community.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) refers to the process by which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to do the following: understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, and make responsible decisions. SEL cultivates important “protective factors” to buffer against mental health risks.

Social and Emotional Learning plays a vital role in mental health and wellness, serving as a cornerstone for creating a secure space that fosters well-being. Its significance extends beyond safety, contributing to a holistic wellness environment with numerous health benefits.

The “I Love Me More” event addressed critical issues related to SEL through a lens specific to women of color, During this empowering event, women, and allies acquired and learned to effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to cultivate important “protective factors” that buffer against mental health challenges.

“I Love Me More” focuses on:

  1. Understanding the value of self-love
  2. Self-esteem boosting strategies
  3. Understanding and managing emotions
  4. Using effective communications strategies
  5. Identifying and setting healthy boundaries

Thank you to Dr. Kelly Williams for your vision. Kudos to the entire ESS & PR Team for an amazing event.
