Dear Families, Students, Educators, and Community Members,
Welcome back to the start of the 2026–2027 school year! I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed a restful, invigorating summer. Building on the strong foundation and partnership we established last year, our district enters this new academic season with sharp focus, elevated standards, and an unwavering dedication to making East Orange a model of progressive urban education.
Delivering on Our Promises: Enhanced Communication & Digital Access
As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we are proud to deliver on a key initiative from last year: our brand-new district website at East Orange School District. Redesigned to make navigating district updates, school calendars, and academic resources seamless and intuitive, the platform also features an interactive AI chatbot on the homepage designed to answer your questions instantly in your preferred language. We are also planning to add a parent-friendly mobile app by the spring of 2027.
Key Focus Areas for the 2026–2027 School Year
Looking ahead, our new strategic priorities center on modernization, academic excellence, community well-being, and optimized learning environments. I am excited to share the four main focus points driving our work forward this year:
1. Sustainable Infrastructure: Clean Energy Initiative
We are investing in long-term environmental and financial sustainability across our facilities:
Facility Upgrades: Installation of new roofs, solar panel systems, and energy-efficient building upgrades across district sites.
Modern Transportation: Integration of electric buses and high-capacity charging stations to reduce our carbon footprint and modernize student transportation.
2. High-Quality Academic Curricula in Literacy & Math
To accelerate student achievement, we are launching updated, research-based instructional programs in ELA and mathematics. These programs were selected through a collaborative committee process involving teachers across our district who participated in vendor reviews, instructional demonstrations, and focus groups:
Elementary Literacy (Grades K–5): Adoption of HMH’s Into Reading, designed to strengthen foundational skills, enhance oral reading fluency, provide targeted interventions, and offer robust resources for bilingual learners.
Mathematics: Adoption of Cengage’s Math & YOU, an innovative program focused on conceptual understanding, problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and tailored student interventions.
3. Comprehensive Health & Wellness Plan
The well-being of our students, families, and staff remains a top priority. This year, we are rolling out a new district Health & Wellness Plan aimed at promoting healthier, balanced lifestyles:
Community Programs: Wellness events, fitness initiatives, and health resources hosted throughout the year.
Healthcare Access: A strategic partnership with healthcare providers in West Orange to afford our school community streamlined access to quality medical professionals and wellness services.
4. Strategic Facility Relocations
To address facility needs and provide specialized support for expanding academic options, we are considering strategic facility shifts. You will hear more about this over the course of the coming year.
Moving Forward Together
Every improvement we make—from the energy efficiency of our buildings to the digital tools we use to stay connected—is rooted in our commitment to seeing East Orange and our children thrive. As a friendly reminder, our schools will continue with a no cellphone “bell to bell” practice, which is now an enacted NJ law. Your child’s school will provide additional guidance on their school-based procedures.
In closing, I want to thank our educators, support staff, Board of Education, Mayor, and Council for their relentless advocacy and dedication. Most importantly, thank you to our families for placing your trust in us. Let’s make the 2026–2027 school year our most impactful year yet.
