What is the dress code for East Orange School District schools?

We expect our students to dress in a way that shows respect for themselves, for others, and for their school to maintain a positive and productive educational environment. Students may not wear any clothing that distracts from their or others’ learning experiences. Each school has its own uniform/dress code policy. Visit your school’s website for more specific information. Specifically, we do not allow:

  • Shirts that expose the midriff or that are cut below the collarbone
  • Shorts that do not pass the “fingertip-length” test
  • Clothing that promotes drug- or gang-related activity
  • Open-toed shoes
  • Tight and/or revealing clothing
  • Spikes, chains, or similar jewelry
  • Nose rings or other body piercings (other than in the ear)
  • Any clothing, apparel, hairstyles, tattoos, and/or accessories which indicate affiliation with any gang or criminal activity

We reserve the right to determine whether a student’s clothing is appropriate for school. For more details regarding our dress code, please review the parents/student handbook. When in doubt, don’t wear it to school.

How will you notify parents of school closings due to weather?

There are times when severe weather conditions and other emergencies require that schools remain closed or delayed. When this happens, the following television and radio stations will provide information for you:

Additionally, we will contact parents via the School Messenger Communication Relay System. Please ensure we have an updated phone number on file for your child.

We are new to the area. How do we enroll our child in school?

Students new to East Orange School District may enroll throughout the year. Parents/guardians must present the following documentation when registering a child:

  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of immunization
  • Proof of legal residence and legal domicile
  • Two forms of identification with an East Orange address (including driver’s license, current utility bill, official mail, income tax return, rental agreement, etc.)

Do you have a program for gifted children?

Yes! The East Orange School District recognizes that there are many students who require differentiated learning experiences due to their outstanding abilities, performance, or potential. These abilities may emerge in general, intellectual, or creative thinking areas. The district has various programs to accommodate students with these abilities. In addition, there are students who may excel in specific content areas. Specialty areas such as performance, leadership, and higher-level thinking are a focus in our schools. If you have questions about our gifted program or think your child might qualify, contact your child’s teacher.
What is the district’s attendance policy?

The East Orange School District believes that systematic attendance in class, participation in class activities, and communication between pupils and teachers are vital and integral parts of the learning process. Constant absences of students from regular classroom learning experiences disrupt the continuity of the instructional and learning process. Poor attendance limits accomplishments and reinforces a habit, which will handicap the child in the future, both educationally and professionally. We distribute written warning notices to parents/guardians on the 4th, 9th, and the 14th day of absences. We mail violation and hearing notices on the 18th day of the absence. After the 18th day of absence, parents may be charged as disorderly persons.
