Our Superintendent
AbdulSaleem Hasan, Ed.S., is Superintendent of Schools for the East Orange, New Jersey, School District. He oversees the education of more than 10,000 students and supervises 900 teachers across 20 schools, Pre–K to 12, as well as a number of collaborating daycare centers.
Prior to serving as Superintendent of Schools, Hasan served directly under the New Jersey State Commissioner of Education as Assistant Commissioner of Field Services for the New Jersey Department of Education.
In his role as Assistant Commissioner, Hasan was charged with oversight of the County Offices of Education as well as various offices within the division, including the Office of Field Services Coordination; Office of Fiscal Accountability & Compliance; Office of District Intervention & Support; Office of Comprehensive Support; Office of Professional Learning Network; the Italian, Holocaust and Amistad Commissions; and the Office of Student Support Services.
Prior to his work as Assistant Commissioner with the New Jersey Department of Education, Hasan served as Principal of the East Orange Campus High School; Vice-Principal of Woodbridge High School (Woodbridge, NJ); and Assistant Principal of the John L. Costley Middle School in East Orange. In East Orange, Hasan also served as an in-class educator, teaching algebra and social studies.Hasan came to education after a successful career in law enforcement and the military, rising to the rank of Command Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army, its highest enlisted rank. He was deployed on U.S. missions to Panama, Kuwait/Iraq (Operation Desert Shield/Storm), and then again to Iraq (Operation Enduring Freedom) over the course of his military career. After these deployments, Hasan served as the Operations Sergeant Major of Plans in the Directorate of Military Support (DOMS) for the U.S. Pentagon Joint Operation Center. DOMS coordinates the provision of military support by the Army in Presidentially declared disasters and other missions requiring major mobilizations of support.
A lifetime member of the State of New Jersey Law Enforcement Honor Legion, Hasan is a retired juvenile police detective who served in both East Orange and Woodbridge, New Jersey for more than twenty years. While doing so he dedicated a significant amount of his time to the youth within the community, serving as a lead mentor and drill sergeant for the Police Explorers and the Partnership for Youth Programs.
He received his B.A. in Law & Justice from Rowan University, an M.A. in Human Resource Management and Training Development from Seton Hall University, and his Ed.S. from Seton Hall as well.
