A group of high school filmmakers in East Orange won Best Documentary at the Newark International Film Festival with their student short, "Beyond the Barrel: An East Orange Story." Turning the spotlight on independent filmmakers from around the world, the Newark International Film Festival is a five-day showcase of independent talent and creative thinking from around the globe. The students’ documentary, which turned the spotlight on the after-effects and personal impact of gun violence, delves into the deep-rooted loss that students felt when a gun was turned on family, friends, and even a teacher. Produced with the help of award-winning broadcast journalist and filmmaker Samson Styles (and under the educational guidance of Jamila T. Davis, Ph.D.) the documentary competed in the Newark International Film Festival against close to 1,000 submissions that came from more than 50 countries.

ladies and gentlemen we would see what our students started this I'm a program and they didn't know what to expect but they put their skills and their talents together and they possibly produce this amazing film through the Lights Camera Action Program award-winning journalist and producer pants in style and who would have ever thought that my students would make it and that they did to the 2021 North Film Festival watch them as they arrive hello everybody hello hello cuz you made it out today everybody clap it up for yourself I am incredibly proud to be a part of this right by my name is Doctor Jamila T Davis and I am the founder of the VIP Online Academy and we had the pleasure to work alongside with the Simpsons Style let's give it up for the Purdue men's basketball a light camera action program for the East Orange program and students today students put together this film that has now made it a selection to the north Film Festival and now we are here give a shout out to our superintendent a song radio the superintendent office kids baking program possible and it still was all about taking acid has decided to stand up against gun violence so you can see what they do and it's kind of the film we want to have a conversation with you what can every person in this room do to create change in your community so thank you and I'm going to turn it back over to our film festival in Denver tickets a spike in gun violence over the past year in New Jersey victims of shootings in this one Past The Vines is a phrase with her way too often almost every conversation here has gun the shot and killed in it shooting people is not a game it's not something you do in your free time or at least it isn't supposed to be how many of the one innocent and I'm a high-school student in Newark New Jersey he has to have been affected by gun violence my teacher Miss he has been shot in the head by her child's father on and it took a big toll on me my name is better Carter I'm 14 and from East Orange New Jersey I was affected by going by his personal my mother was shot multiple times back in 2017 my name is Nessa I'm 18 years old there are many occasions where I have been affected by gun violence some has been my friends some have been my cousin fantasy people that we know who that is cool people that come in contact with a lot of the time but we may lose that at over things that could be changed or I could be avoided who would have thought people want to feel safe in their own homes young people scared walking down the streets because of all the killings in their town the part that I feel like the neighborhood please and gun violence is a kind of enable it only because if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem they don't see nothing when they see it so when you see why don't you say something if it causes of gun violence is based on mainly the community they grew up in cuz you know if you're raising a good Community you're less likely to be involved in gangs and stuff games player Facebook has a picture when they put people against each other like they they turned friends into enemies and families into enemies the tournament I found I had the malestar nation are we ever going to be awakened from Jackal nightmare teacher shot and killed outside her home in New Jersey police say the gunman is the father of her child I went to the school fight Academy in a start and it was a teacher that we have me Miss May I was one day I was getting my hair done and my mom as he broke the news to me that she has been shot by her child's father and the head and when we return to school it was very breathtaking away because due to lost I'll just seen her the week before so now I'm going back to school I didn't see her so it took a big toll on everybody other than my cousin I had a friend and my friend that was like me and him we go out together he lost his life and you when you're close to somebody and when you're so close to somebody and you seem like you can have a conversation with them in one moment and L next moment the election be gone just like that when you see somebody take their last breath and when you see somebody's life get taken from me it's hard because there's nothing you can do you can only pray waiting for their accomplishments others are grieving capacity by the age of 9 I shouldn't have had full strength will come back is like or better yet I should have had that all my mother was shot multiple times back in 2017 she was out with her sister her cousin and they were just trying to enjoy the night at a comedy club and some guys I guess they were looking for somebody and they shot at the club and my mom and aunt were victims of it my mom she's in the hospital for a cup weeks if like maybe up some more time I was sure I had to basically Step Up had to take care of my little sister I just had to make sure I had a really young age I was ten at the time after that we went to go see my mom in the hospital and then Ashley how to go to surgery 8-hour surgery she got eat Nails on her knee and one plate she got shot twice in her arm and wants her knee and when she came home she was still she couldn't walk so she was in bed all the time so I had to learn how to cook you know how to cook meals I wash clothes at the dishes ARP so many times that's becoming part of my vocabulary. From now on I'll put myself on confinement to the next bullet doesn't end up in me I think what can be done is to stop gun violence is like you know how to talk to them you know. taking kids off Street not you know try to run down on them and arrest them cuz that's a fact I'm even more for dealing with Architects and price if you pour it is not could you share some of the reasons and some of the things that you think are working these are and that are causing one thing we're very proud of and I have to kind of reflect back when I'll Police Department many of them imma stay close to 75% and maybe a little more most of those men and women are from East Orange and I'll Police Department is engaged in Arkham Mighty right and not only that when other cities went through that up to up take right in terms of what happened to George Floyd and other people Brianna Taylor and it to me rice if you notice in the city of East Orange we didn't have that problem but the number one thing I was so proud of jamella and Ladonna and mayor's office employment and training in my office when those young people came to me and said a man we want to do a March Hare in the city of East Orange I didn't have one reservation about allowing our young people to have that voice to protest cuz you should you should always fight for what's right and not only that Isle Police Department join hands stop gun violence you have to limit the access of guns they are giving up to $50 per weapon no questions asked to be at that location again if I my back what I think could be done to stop gun violence is basically when you speak the kids you can't speak to them like you're their Authority you have to speak to them like you understand even if you don't because I'm a kid as a teenager I know speaking of the old me is Google one ear and out the other if you speak to me like you understand like if you really get deep with me then I might just listen at no time I want you to go get your education and enjoy the city that you live in
